Plygene Gutterline® hits the heights for a magnificent London landmark

Tourists arriving at St Pancras, London’s second Eurostar Terminus, don’t need to travel much further to see some of the capital’s most impressive architecture. One glance towards the sky provides a breathtaking view of the station’s famous Barlow Shed roof with its awesome barrel design, now beautifully restored as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment.

What tourists may fail to appreciate, however, is its remarkable drainage system, comprising 88 gutters cascading elegantly from the apex of the roof for 22 metres on either side.

For such an immense structure, rotting gutters are simply not an option so, when asked to provide permanent 100% waterproofing as part of the building’s refurbishment, contractors Facade System Engineering Limited knew that only the best materials would do, and contact H D Sharman to install its Plygene Gutterline® system.

Lining had to fit perfectly, despite the obvious challenges set by the unusual structure, but H D Shaman came up with a bespoke solution. Instead of separate liners and ridge pieces, the Gutterline was welded into complete rolls that fitted snugly over ridges to flow seamlessly down through the gutters. After being carefully moulded into the glass panels, the lining made the roof entirely rainproof and, thanks to its easy application, helped catapult the project several weeks ahead of schedule.
