Gutterline helps Twickenham’s massive redevelopment

While rugby players may be happy to get drenched in pursuit of their favourite sport, spectators generally prefer to watch from the sidelines in comparative comfort. So when the RFU gave the go-ahead to expand the South Stand of Twickenham stadium, care was taken to make the new structure entirely weatherproof with a high spec syphonic drainage system.

Due to the galvanised steel gutters, however, which ran from the top of the stand to the outside perimeter, it soon became apparent that preventing leakage would be no easy task. So, after consulting with main contractors Carillion, roofing specialists, West London Industrial Roofing and Building Services turned to H D Sharman for a specialised, bespoke solution.

HD Sharman conducted a survey of the new stand and produced almost 250 metres of Plygene Gutterline® with custom-moulded junctions and fitted seals for the syphonic outlets. Once the team gained access to the gutters, putting the lining into position was relatively simple, as the single-section rolls were joint-free and had been made to measure at HD Sharman’s factory, creating a perfect fit.

The South Stand has had no leaks since Gutterline was installed, providing shelter for up to 82,000 fans, even in the face of torrential rain.
