Under BS EN 12056 – 3:2000, roof drainage design is calculated against a range of rainfall scenarios to efficiently direct the flow of water away from the infrastructure of a building. Provisional Met Office figures prove that this is increasingly relevant as rainfall has steadily risen year on year since 2000 with 2014 recorded as the UK’s fourth wettest year since 1910.

Every day, commercial and industrial buildings suffer damage due to leaking gutters. This damage can affect a building’s interior fit out, external envelope and even its foundations.

In cases where leaks occur, the most common cause is joint failure due to a combination of corrosion, building movement, poor initial installation and a lack of ongoing maintenance.

A complete replacement of valley and boundary gutters can be costly and disruptive, especially if it requires the temporary removal of the roof. Ad hoc repairs can also be expensive and, more importantly, are an ineffective long term solution for leak prevention.
